For the past two years, due to concerns with COVID and large gatherings, the members of Local Clay Potters’ Guild have chosen to not hold their annual Bloomington Fall show so By Hand Gallery has invited all Local Clay members to show a few pieces of their work and will dedicate 2 months for the exhibit. It includes many forms of fired clay including earthenware, stoneware and porcelain made into functional tableware, sculpture, and wall pieces.
History
Local Clay Potters’ Guild is a cooperative organization, founded in 1997.It promotes individual artistic growth and the artistic standing of Local Clay as a whole and contributes to the growth of interest in the ceramic arts in Indiana.
It holds an annual potters sale in November at the Monroe Convention center which reaches out to clay patrons across Indiana.
In February, in holds the Soup Bowl Benefit for Hoosier Hills Food Bank which helps reach out to the broader clay community including high school students, IU ceramics students, Waldron students, teachers and studio potters. This combination of people weaves together a community of clay lovers whose contributions are directed to eliminating hunger and supporting a well-established organization.
These two events connect potters by creating professional opportunities along with unexpected and truly wonderful relationships. Local Clay Potters’ Guild members share information, order supplies together, travel together to shows and events, and organize the fall show that has become the premier pottery show in Indiana.
